Temperament of a Great Dane

I strive for the best temperament possible in my Danes. Family friendly, gentle, affectionate, sweet, patient and great with kids.

The Great Dane has a good disposition, don’t let their enormous size fool your - they often lovingly referred to as a “Gentle Giant”. Charming and affectionate, playful and patient, loving to everyone and has the desire to be around people. The Great Dane is an intelligent dog who is eager to please. The Great Dane usually does not bark much and normally doesn’t become aggressive unless circumstances require it. Reliable, trustworthy and very dependable. Courageous and loyal, which makes them an amazing watch dog. The Great Dane does not stay little for long, therefore consistent training and boundaries should start from the beginning. This giant dog should be taught not to jump up on people. It is imperative to establish yourself as Pack Leader, this is a very natural instinct to dogs as a whole. When humans and dogs live together, they become a pack, the entire pack cooperates under a single pack leader.

There are a couple different types of temperament tests that can be performed. AKC has CGC (Canine Good Citizen) and TT (Temperament Testing) titles that dogs can receive. In the end the breeder should always allow you to visit with them and their dogs, see how and where the dogs and puppies are raised and allow you to interact with the dogs.
